README.TXT - INSTRUCTIONS AND NOTES FOR VERSION 4.0 TRANSLATION (By Jared Hess) ==Introduction== Hello. In this version for the Core PC-DMIS help file, we are moving away from localizing .rtf files. Instead, we will localize the individual .htm files. Translators will need to use Trados TagEditor application to localize the .htm files. (If you aren't familiar with how to do this, see the .doc file in this folder for some rudimentry instructions that I wrote up. Also consult your TagEditor help file for more in-depth information.) == Latest Notes (Newest Note on Top) == January 25, 2006 - I have uploaded an updated English source for the Core PC-DMIS help file (V40MAIN project). There have been several fixes and additions to this help file since the September 2005 that have prompted this update. Please use the CoreHelpFile_January2006.zip file located here: ftp://ftp.wilcoxassoc.com/docs/ToLocalize/OnLineHelp/V40MAIN/ I have deleted the previous source named CoreHelpFile_September2005.zip. January 12, 2005 - I created a tutorial that provides a workaround for translating .HHK and .HHC files. See TranslatingHHCandHHKFiles.zip. I have also included an updated ENGLISH_PCDMIS_DTD.INI file used with the workaround. December 8, 2005 - In the topic, 9_edit_window_topics/Header_and_Footer_Formatting_Keywords.htm *do not* translate the formatting keywords that begin with #: #DATE #TIME #PAGE #TRn #PARTN #DRWN #SERIALN #SEQUENCE #SHRINK #NMEAS #NOUT #ELAPSTIM #BMP=bitmappath NOVEMBER 2, 2005 - I have uploaded a DTD file named ENGLISH_PCDMIS_DTD.INI. Just so we're all on the same page, please use this file for your V40 PC-DMIS projects. It is based off of the standard HTML4 DTD file created by Trados with a few minor modifications. SEPTEMBER 23, 2005 - I have uploaded an updated a (fixed) version 4.0 English source for the Core PC-DMIS help file located in V40MAIN. Maite, our Spanish Translator, encountered segmentation issues due to how glossary of term links were created in the English source by RoboHelp (our Help Authoring software). This appears to be fixed now. Please use the CoreHelpFile_September2005.zip file located here: ftp://ftp.wilcoxassoc.com/docs/ToLocalize/OnLineHelp/V40MAIN/ Translators should use this help file for any remaining .htm files that they haven't already translated. I have deleted the previous source uploaded on August 12, 2005. AUGUST, 12, 2005 - English documentation is now done for version 4.0. The core help file is in the directory, in V40MAIN. The entire project has been uploaded. Please download the file CoreHelpFile_August2005.zip to a temporary drive. Also, there are several additional projects for PC-DMIS 4.0, outside of the V40MAIN directory that you will also need to localize as well. These are located in: v40FIXTURING V40PCDMISLASER V40INSPECTIONPLANNER V40PCDMISVISION V40PCDMISNC V40TUTORTRANSLATOR Once you have downloaded the project .zip files, follow the instructions below for each project. JUNE 27, 2005 - I've uploaded an initial batch of chapters (.zip files) that will most likely not change in the English, so that you can start localizing this version. As I finish writing up documentation for the English chapters, I'll upload them into this directory, and making a note in this Readme file. ==Overall Procedure to Follow to Translate== * Create a directory that will hold all the English source files. * Extract the contents of the .zip file into the newly created source files directory, using folder pathways specified in the .zip file. Several sub directories, one for each chapter, will appear in your source directory. * Create a destination directory for localized files. * Launch Trados Tag Editor. * Open a .htm file from a source sub directory. * Localize the .htm file. When finished, save the localized file into a destination directory that uses the same directory structure as the English source, continue localizing .htm files until they're all localized. Note: Rather than selecting Save As for each file, you can alternately perform a CleanUp operation on all bilingual (.ttx) files, to remove all the source language items, leaving the target language for your output. * When you finish localizing a chapter (all the .htms in a zip file), localize any image files that you feel need to be localized. Some of these files may simply need a screenshot taken of a dialog in the target langauage. Others may require you to type text on top of the screenshot. I personally recommend using SnagIt (www.techsmith.com). If you feel an image isn't needed in your target language (for example there are several command buttons that we take screenshots of in the English that you may not want to take the time to localize), simply delete it from your localized file. Some notes on images - Most dialog screenshots are resized to 70% their full size. - The source images for a chapter are usually located in a directory under the directory containing that chapter's .htm files. * When you have finished localizing all the chapters, localize the index (.hhk) and table of contents (.hhc) files. * Once everything is done, zip up your entire destination directory and upload it to the server and notify Brad and me. I will then build the localized help files and add them to the PC-DMIS installation.
